Layovers in Style!
In the past I would sit in an airport during a long layover in a hard, uncomfortable seat and hope that the time passed quickly until I was back on the plane and in the air. Squeezed in between others engaging in the same activity, I would dream of something more luxurious. While sitting I would end up spending about $20 dollars on an airport priced sandwich, drink and desert. I am not sure what was more painful, the chair or the price of food. Often I would see businessmen enter and exit lounges scattered throughout the airport. They all seemed quite relaxed having full stomachs and a drink for the road so to speak. I had the opportunity to visit the U.S. Airways lounge in Tampa back in the 1990’s with my father, as he was a frequent flyer and in the “business class”. Given that I only travel a few times per year, I do not have the airline clout or extra cash to afford the lounge experience. However, things are much different now as times have progressed and airport services are geared to all types of travelers. A new company called Lounge Buddy now exists to provide any and all travelers with access to airport lounges around the world for a relatively low per visit cost. Generally, visits can range anywhere from 2-4 hours depending on the lounge, though some charge more depending on the number of hours requested. Lounge prices vary, but many offer food, beverages, a good place to rest. In some cases, quality toilets, sinks, showers (usually an extra charge) and private rooms are provided. If you are making your way around the world on a long trip and have couple hours with a layover, these types of lounges can offer a great resting spot. Lounge Buddy is constantly adding lounges to their network, so make sure to check back often to see what new lounges they have added.
